pKADS was officially launched on December 10, 2003 at the World Summit of the Information Society in Geneva, Switzerland. UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, has developed a Knowledge Asset Development system (KADS), which it uses for capturing and sharing knowledge within the organization. Following requests from collaborating organizations, UNFPA undertook to create an open source, portable version of this system. pKADS (portable Knowledge Asset Development System) was developed jointly by UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, and Business Information Systems, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland. Development was fully funded by the Government of Ireland, through the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources. pKADS is a desktop application, written in Java, that can be used to create "Knowledge Assets," which:
